Work less and achieve more?
I read an article posted on the Vistage Blog page a few weeks back and thought it was interesting but a little impractical. Then, by chance, the topic came up at an event I attended last week. Only this time, it was related to the fact that a Consultancy firm had advised the MD of a small business that the valuation of his business could almost double if he wasn’t necessary to to on-going success of the business.
The crux of the message at the event was that business owners need to ensure they run their businesses using systems, which make it considerably easier for others to step in and take over from time-to-time, allowing the MD some headroom to do some more valuable planning for the future. I meet many owners or MD’s who are so consumed by the day-to-day running of their business that they don’t make the time to do the most valuable stuff – the important but not urgent issues. This is where ensuring you have adequate systems in place comes in; it creates the time for you to look at the future, safe in the knowledge that the business can function day-to-day without you needing to be involved in the minutia.
The article on the Vistage blog page also reminds us of some of the other value to be derived from taking less time at the ‘coal face’. It is worth a read and can be found by clicking here. Hope you find the time to read it!
