12 shortcuts to be a better boss is a neat little article from Inc.com that condenses what could be the contents of a small book into a simple list. It’s a great checklist to keep with you in order to ensure that you stay true to the principles. Therein lies the problem. It is too easy to lapse into old ways or to revert to an unhealthy type when the heat is on. I have been on the receiving end – and to my disappointment, the giving end – of an uneven temperament in a manager. It took me a lot of practice to ‘count to ten’ and hold off reacting to a situation in order to ensure I remain consistent with my approach. It pays to persevere and I like to think that the feedback I received on my management style in the last management role I held in corporate life bears testimony to the value in internalising these 12 disciplines.
